Education Division TECO in Chicago holds 2022 Midwest Taiwanese Student Associations Conference

On September 17, 2022, the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Chicago held the “2022 Midwest Taiwanese Student Associations Conference,” attended by 37 association presidents and office holders from 19 universities. The goal of the conference, which took place online and on-site at TECO’s Culture Center in Westmont, Illinois, was to support Taiwanese students, enhance their experience of studying in the Midwest, provide guidance to student presidents on leadership skills, and strengthen the bonds with student associations to ensure that they continue to provide excellent service to the Taiwanese student community.

As Director General Johnson Chiang of TECO in Chicago was unable to attend the conference due to other important engagements, Director Daniel Hung of the Press Division represented him and gave opening remarks to the student leaders. Director Hung expressed his appreciation to the students, who by pursuing higher education in the United States and increasing their valuable talent, are also improving Taiwan’s future and
global influence. TECO in Chicago also strives to offer a better job search environment for graduating students. During the past year, Director Hung noted, TECO in Chicago has held nine Taiwan-U.S. business forums encouraging Taiwan industry leaders to open factories in the Midwest, succeeded in facilitating bilateral agreements between several Taiwanese and U.S. universities, and also promoted Taiwan-U.S. semiconductor supply chain cooperation and job training programs for high-tech talent.

Director Eugene Shu of the Consular Division explained the services of the division, including passport, visa and authentication services. He reminded students of the types of emergency situations for which TECO is unable to assist, and provided suggestions and examples on how to deal with those types of emergencies.

Director John Lin of the Education Division introduced the main functions of the division, which are Ministry of Education scholarships, Taiwan-U.S. academic cooperation and serving Taiwanese students in the Midwestern states. Director Lin also shared wisdom on how to adjust to American life and how to best protect one’s personal
safety in the United States.

Director Chin-Sung Cheng of the Economic Division spoke about the main operation of the division, which includes promoting Taiwan-U.S. bilateral trade cooperation, encouraging business owners to invest in the Midwest and providing technical assistance and collaboration. He then introduced the Contact TAIWAN global talent platform and Taiwan Gold Card program implemented by the Ministry of Economic Affairs for professionals seeking future opportunities in Taiwan.

In the afternoon, Vice President Annabelle Chen of the Taiwanese Junior Chamber of Commerce Chicago shared job search tips for graduating students, such as how to do industry research and networking, prepare a competitive resume, and hone one’s interview skills. She also maintained that a positive attitude and good etiquette go a long way in a job search.

Empathizing with the students’ experiences studying abroad and the struggles of immersing oneself in a foreign culture, mental health counselor Wanting Walker shared useful resources and encouraged participants to keep their mental health a top priority.

The Education Division of TECO-Chicago serves ten Midwestern states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, with approximately 3,835 Taiwanese students and 50 Taiwanese Student Associations. The Education Division fully utilizes the network of Taiwanese
Student Associations to ensure that it is providing the best service to Taiwanese students.
